If you are a homeowner you will most like likely be cleaning gutters. They can easily become obstructed with leaves, sticks, and roofing material. Over time, some of the asphalt roofing will slowly wash into the guttering. This job should be done once a year. However, twice a year may be better.
Check your roof. How high from the ground is it. Most likely one side will be higher than the other. You will need to decide if you will clean from the roof or from the ground. It may be safer to clean from the roof. However, you will be working on the edge. If you have a problem with heights, it may not be a good idea. In fact, if heights bother you, you may be better off having someone else do it.
You may decide that it will be easier to work from a ladder. You will need a good sturdy extension ladder. If you do not have one, buying one is a good investment. Make sure that you get a sturdy and well made ladder. This is not a place to scrimp. Your well-being will depend on the sturdiness and construction of your ladder. Spend the extra money and get a good one.
When you set your ladder up, be careful. Do not set it against your guttering. This can bend and damage them. Most are made of soft material like aluminum. Place the ladder under the guttering.
There is no exact way to clean them. The main idea is to get all of the muck and dead leaves out of there. Do not be surprised if you find any frogs or lizards. You might want to consider wearing gloves. There is no telling what you might come across up there. You may have a stopped up gutter.
When you get up there you may notice some odd things. This is especially true if you have kids. Certain things are perfect for stopping up your gutters. For example, a tennis ball will fit perfectly into many drain holes. You may notice a large selection of toys and balls in the gutter. Do not bother asking how they got there. It is a mystery and no one will know what happened.
When cleaning, do not set the debris on the roof. It will be too easy for it to fall back into the gutters. When most of the big stuff is out, flush with a garden hose.
